The selection of candidates is a rigorous three-stage process:
- Shortlisting of Applications: Based on normalized marks obtained in the qualifying degree (BE/B.Tech or PG). The Navy uses a normalization formula to level the playing field across different universities. Candidates are shortlisted for SSB in a ratio based on vacancies.
- SSB Interview: Shortlisted candidates will be called for the Services Selection Board interview at one of the Naval SSB centres. The SSB process lasts for 5 days and includes Intelligence Tests, Psychological Tests, Group Tasks, and Personal Interview.
- Medical Examination: Candidates recommended by the SSB will undergo a stringent medical examination at a nominated military hospital as per the medical standards of the Indian Navy.
The final merit list is prepared based on SSB marks, subject to medical fitness and availability of vacancies in the chosen entry.
The Indian Navy SSC Officer selection does not involve a written exam. The entire evaluation is done through the SSB Interview. The pattern is as follows:
| Stage | Description | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Stage I (Day 1) | Intelligence Test (Verbal & Non-Verbal), Picture Perception & Description Test (PPDT). | Screening test. Successful candidates proceed to Stage II. |
| Stage II (Days 2-5) | Psychological Tests (TAT, WAT, SRT, SD), Group Testing Officer Tasks (GD, GPE, PGT, HGT, IOT, Command Task, Lecturette, FGT), Personal Interview. | In-depth assessment of Officer Like Qualities (OLQs): Planning, Social Adjustment, Communication, Determination, etc. |
- Current Affairs: National & International events, Defense updates, Geopolitics.
- General Awareness: Indian History, Geography, Polity, Economy, Basic Science.
- Psychological Preparation: Self-analysis, understanding one's own interests, aims, strengths, and weaknesses.
- Communication Skills: Fluency in English/Hindi, clarity of thought, group discussion skills.
- Physical Fitness: While not a structured test, good fitness helps in outdoor GTO tasks.
The admit card or call letter for the SSB interview will not be posted. Shortlisted candidates will receive an email and SMS on their registered contact details with a link to download the call letter from the official website. Candidates must not change their email or mobile number until the selection process is complete. The call letter will contain details of the SSB centre, date, reporting time, and documents to carry.
Candidates will be allotted an SSB centre based on their preferences and availability. The change of SSB centre is not permissible under any circumstances. Major SSB centres for Indian Navy include Bangalore, Bhopal, Coimbatore, and Visakhapatnam. The exact centre will be mentioned in the call letter.
The final result is declared in the form of a merit list on the official Indian Navy website. The merit list is prepared based on the candidate's performance in the SSB, subject to being medically fit. Inclusion in the merit list does not confer an automatic right to appointment. Appointment is based strictly on the order of merit and the number of available vacancies in each branch.
The Indian Navy does not pre-define a cut-off. Shortlisting for SSB is based on the normalized marks of the qualifying degree, relative to the number of applicants and vacancies. The final selection cut-off (SSB marks) varies each year and depends on candidate performance and branch-wise vacancy.
Candidates who clear the SSB and medicals and find a place in the final merit list will receive a joining letter for training.
